In the heart of Persia, in the ancient valleys cradled by towering mountains, a legend has been passed down through generations—a tale of the Simurgh, a mythical bird of wisdom, beauty, and unparalleled power. Its name evoked wonder, reverence, and a touch of fear, for the Simurgh was no ordinary creature. Cloaked in the colors of sunrise and sunset, its feathers shimmered with hues of gold, red, and blue, and its wings were said to span the sky. The Simurgh’s origins were as mysterious as the creature itself, a being from the earliest days of creation, perched on the sacred Tree of Knowledge, offering guidance to those who dared seek it.

This tale begins with Zal, a mortal man whose fate was entwined with the majestic bird. Born to Saam, a powerful warrior of Persia, Zal’s birth was both a blessing and a curse. Unlike other infants, his hair was pure white, a striking contrast that filled his father with dread. To Saam, this was an omen, a mark of something unnatural. Despite the child’s innocence, fear overwhelmed Saam, and he decided that his son could not remain among men.

Thus, in the dead of night, Zal was abandoned on the mountain peaks of Alborz, left to perish among the crags and the chill of the highlands. It was here that the Simurgh found him, a wailing babe shivering in the cold. With a heart touched by compassion, the Simurgh took him in, raising him as her own atop the mountain, where the winds whispered ancient secrets and the stars bore witness to a life lived far from human touch.

The Bond of Mother and Child

Young Zal is sheltered by the Simurgh atop a misty Persian mountain.
The young Zal, sheltered by the wise Simurgh, finds warmth and guidance under the bird’s magnificent wings, surrounded by the misty, ancient landscape of the Persian mountains.

Under the Simurgh’s nurturing wing, Zal grew into a strong, wise young man, learning the ways of the world through the bird’s stories of creation, love, and the folly of kings. The Simurgh taught him the languages of animals, the healing properties of herbs, and the art of listening to the world’s unspoken voices. With her vast knowledge, the Simurgh instilled in Zal a sense of duty, compassion, and respect for all living beings.

As Zal matured, so did his yearning for something more—something human. The Simurgh understood this yearning, for she herself was a creature that existed between worlds. She watched with a mother’s pride and a mother’s sorrow as Zal’s eyes began to wander to the distant plains, imagining the life he might lead beyond the mountains.

One day, the Simurgh spoke to Zal, her voice both gentle and firm. “My child,” she said, “you are of this world, yet not of it. The blood of men flows in your veins, and I cannot keep you here forever. You must return to your people and fulfill your destiny, but know that you will always carry my teachings within you.”

With that, the Simurgh plucked a feather from her magnificent wings and handed it to Zal. “In times of great need, burn this feather, and I shall come to your aid,” she said. Zal, overcome with gratitude and sorrow, embraced the Simurgh, and with a heavy heart, he descended the mountain to rejoin the world of men.

Return to Civilization

The people of Persia were astonished by Zal’s return. His white hair, once a mark of shame, became a symbol of wisdom and mystery. Saam, filled with regret, welcomed his son back with open arms, marveling at the grace and knowledge that Zal carried. News of the young man raised by the Simurgh spread far and wide, reaching the ears of kings and scholars alike.

In the years that followed, Zal proved himself as a wise and just leader, but his heart longed for love. He eventually met Rudabeh, a beautiful princess of Kabul, and their love story became legendary. However, their union was fraught with political tensions and societal disapproval, as Rudabeh’s lineage was seen as a threat to Persia’s stability.

On the eve of their marriage, the two lovers faced a daunting challenge. Rudabeh’s pregnancy was difficult, and no physician could ease her suffering. Zal, desperate and terrified, remembered the feather the Simurgh had given him. Without hesitation, he set it ablaze.

The Return of the Simurgh

The Simurgh descends to aid Rudabeh, filling the Persian palace with light as Zal looks on.

In a burst of radiant light, the Simurgh descended from the skies, her wings spreading warmth and peace across the land. She approached Rudabeh with a gentle grace, her wisdom emanating like the glow of a full moon. With delicate precision, the Simurgh performed an ancient ritual, easing Rudabeh’s pain and ensuring the safe birth of their child, Rostam, who would later become one of Persia’s greatest heroes.

Rostam was born strong and healthy, his first cries echoing through the palace halls as a sign of hope and renewal. The people rejoiced, hailing the child as a blessing from the heavens, a gift from the Simurgh herself. Zal bowed before his motherly benefactor, gratitude shining in his eyes as he whispered his thanks. The Simurgh, with a mother’s pride, watched over the family one last time before vanishing into the heavens.

Rostam: The Hero’s Journey

As Rostam grew, his strength and bravery became apparent to all. He inherited his father’s wisdom and the mystical touch of the Simurgh’s blessing. Tales of his exploits spread across Persia, as he defended the land from invaders, monsters, and the forces of darkness. Yet, despite his many victories, Rostam was not without his own struggles.

In one of his most harrowing challenges, Rostam found himself in a dire battle with the demon Esfandiyar, a warrior of equal strength and valor. The battle was fierce, each warrior wielding unimaginable power. But Esfandiyar was nearly invulnerable, protected by magic that made him immune to mortal weapons.

Faced with certain defeat, Rostam recalled the stories his father had shared about the Simurgh and the feather she had bestowed upon their family. Though he had no feather left to summon her, he prayed to the spirit of the Simurgh, hoping she might hear him in his time of need.

To his amazement, the Simurgh appeared in his dreams, guiding him to a solution. She revealed to him the secret of Esfandiyar’s vulnerability: his eyes. With this knowledge, Rostam crafted an arrow tipped with the bones of a sacred bird, a gift from the Simurgh, and in a final duel, he aimed for Esfandiyar’s eyes, striking down his foe and securing victory for Persia.

Throughout his life, Zal spoke of the Simurgh with reverence, ensuring that her wisdom would be passed down through the generations. He taught his people the lessons she had shared, and over time, the story of the Simurgh became a cornerstone of Persian culture. The Simurgh’s feather, though lost to time, remained a powerful symbol, representing resilience, hope, and the bond between nature and humanity.

The legacy of the Simurgh extended beyond Rostam’s victories and Zal’s teachings. Her spirit became woven into the fabric of Persian myth, a guardian of knowledge and protector of the innocent. Travelers, poets, and scholars recounted tales of the mighty bird, believing that her wisdom flowed through the rivers, mountains, and stars of Persia.

Even as empires rose and fell, the story of the Simurgh endured. Her image was etched into the minds of artists and carved onto the walls of ancient temples. The Simurgh became a beacon for those seeking guidance, a symbol of Persia’s connection to a mystical, ancient world.

The Symbol of Hope

Scholars and mystics wrote of her as a being beyond time, a creature that bridged the realms of gods and men. It was said that as long as one person remembered her story, the Simurgh would live on, guiding and watching over Persia from afar.

And so, the Simurgh remained. Though few ever saw her, her spirit lingered in the mountains, the deserts, and the valleys. Those who sought her with a pure heart were believed to find her in the whispers of the wind, in the rustling of leaves, and in the glow of the morning sun. The Simurgh became a testament to the enduring power of love, wisdom, and the indomitable spirit of the Persian people.
